Ewens Ponds

A National Conservation Park located in the South East of South Australia. Consisting of 4 ponds chained together by a narrow channel which eventually winds it's way out to sea. The Ponds are fed by groundwater filtered through limestone over thousands of years. At the bottom of these ponds the water can be seen bubbling through the silty limestone floor.

The first 3 ponds are by far the most interesting with an entry ladder located at the first pond and an exit ladder at the third pond. The fourth pond is rarely visited unless divers or snorkellers opt to continue down the final 2 km of the channel to sea.

The first Pond is the largest with a depth of 9.5 metres, surrounded by a jungle of reeds and other underwater growth. Visibility is extraordinary at well over 50 metres in good conditions (when divers haven't silted it up).
